How do You Prevent Atherosclerosis?

It is currently believed that Atherosclerosis is a precursor to Coronary Heart Disease. Statistics show that CHD is the leading cause of death in America today. The American Heart Association (AHA)reports that there are 72 million Americans that have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease and over 147,000 Americans who die from cardiovascular disease are under the age of 65. According to the AHA, Coronary heart disease is caused by atherosclerosis, which means the narrowing of the coronary arteries due to fatty buildups of plaque.

Is Cholesterol Really Bad?

Plaque is mainly in the form of cholesterol, but cholesterol alone is not the real indicator of heart disease. The body needs cholesterol for many functions, such as for the ability to produce natural hormones, and for the myelin sheath that surrounds the nerves. Contrary to most modern diets, fat is a necessary component for normal body function. In fact, when one limits his consumption of healthy fat, the body will overcompensate and produce even more cholesterol in order to give the body what it needs to maintain health. Hormones, nerves and even the cells need fats in order to function. What really leads to heart disease is inflammation in the blood vessels. This can come from many factors such as: local trauma, vitamin deficiency, poor diet, over consumption of trans fats, fried foods, and smoking. Lack of exercise can also be a major cause of plaque buildup in the arteries.

Improve Your Cholesterol with Your Diet

We all know the recommendations of the American Heart Association, but how serious are we in following these recommendations??

Your daily regiment should include:

  • fresh vegetables and fruits,
  • eliminating all trans-fats, (hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils)
  • minimize the consumption of fried foods. Frying with the wrong oils can oxidize the food and cause free radicals to accumulate in your blood stream.
  • Exercise daily to keep your heart muscles strong, and to keep the blood flowing through your arteries.
How many times do we hear stories of someone who was “perfectly healthy” collapse on the floor with a heart attack. Don’t let this happen to you. Maintain regular health checkups. Have your bloodwork evaluated to detect any signs of coronary inflammation. Specific tests that can be beneficial to determine if there is inflammation in the blood vessels are c-reactive protein (crp) and homocysteine.
