If you are serious about improving your health using colon cleanse and
are working on improving your lifestyle, then you must give some consideration to the functioning of your colon.
When clients come into my office, I’ll usually ask them if they are constipated. Most will say, “not at all, I go once every two to three days. That’s normal, isn’t it?” No, that’s not normal and truthfully, most Americans do suffer from constipation. One should have a bowel movement at least once or twice a day, without strain, and of a normal consistency.

Some of the symptoms most commonly associated with sluggish, or toxic colon can include:
- Fatigue

There are many ways to cleanse the colon, some more radical, and others more balanced and gentle on the system.
Many holistic health practitioners advocate a regiment of ‘high colonics’ to get rid of deep seated fecal material.
You cannot do this yourself, but if you are interested in this approach, you should seek out a practioner who performs colon irrigation. The downside to doing colonic irrigation can be that it causes dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, so if you opt for doing the colonics, make sure that you are getting enough fluids and electrolytes.
In my years of practice I have noticed that some people tend to overdue the colonics feeling that they constantly need to detoxify.
A more conservative approach would be to make dietary change to include a program of colon detoxification. Such a program could include the following:
- High Fiber at each meal. Whole grains, raw vegetables, nuts and seeds.
- Essential Fatty Acid Supplementation such as a tablespoon of flax oil at each meal.
- Psyllium Seed husks, or bentonite clay mixed with water and taken morning and night on an empty stomach.
- Probiotics-good quality probiotics supplement the intestines with good flora which is necessary for your bowels to function properly.
- Water-so many people today are dehydrated and don’t even realize it. Make sure your water is pure and free from its own toxins.
When would colonic irrigation be recommended?
In chronic conditions where a more conservative approach has been attempted and you haven’t seen any improvement in your symptoms. Make sure that you are under the care of a health professional to make the final decision.
