Coping With The Effects of Stress
The effects of stress have become a major concern in our society today.
The problem has come to the point that psychologists have called this century the age of anxiety. You probably don’t have to be reminded that stress can come from many areas of life: work, money, family, friends, health and diet are some of the main sources of stress.
Much research has been done on the effects of stress and how it affects people in their daily lives. Over 250 studies between 1960 and 2000 have shown that prolonged stress can play a major role in the deterioration of the immune system. As you know, the immune system not only helps protect you from catching colds and viruses, but it also works to protect our bodies from more serious disease as well.

Chronic Stress Syndrome
What are the signs of the effects of stress? You may be prone to elevated blood pressure, increased heart rate, stiff and painful muscles, nervousness, fatigue, and inability to function. If you do not learn how to cope with stress, your body can develop signs of chronic stress syndrome. This can lead to headaches, ulcers, insomnia and depression.
People under stress will usually take to drinking coffee, which makes the problem even worse. Or, they may take to medications to solve their problems. Antidepressants, anti-anxiety pills and of course medications to bring down the blood pressure. Some people eat comfort foods such as cake, or chocolate and end up gaining much weight.
Even though we can’t get rid of your effects of stress, we can strengthen your nervous system to better deal with the stressors. In a healthy person, the brain and nervous system are in constant communication with every cell of your body. Traumas, both emotional and physical, can cause a breakdown with you nervous system’s ability to adapt to the stressors in the environment. By strengthening the nervous system you can develop an inner strength that can keep you relaxed and more able to cope with your daily life’s activities.
What You Can Do to Relieve Stress?
- Reduce your sugar intake. Simple carbs has the same negative effect as sugar which stresses your adrenal glands causing you to become even more vulnerable to stress.
- Reduce or eliminate coffee. Caffeine is a nervous system irritant which can cause nervousness and irritability and can affect your ability to handle sugar.
- B vitamins are known to help relax the nervous system.
- Herbs such as valerian root, kava kava, and ginseng, are both relaxing and strengthening for the adrenal glands.
- Deep breathing and relaxation exercise should be performed daily.
- Develop a positive mental attitude. The glass is either half empty or half full. If we focus on the positive side of life, we will be more able to handle the difficulties and challenges.
- Have a long term plan, but try to take one day at a time. If a skier looks down to the bottom of the slope, he’ll probably fall. So he trains himself to look immediately in front of himself to negotiate every little turn in the slope.
- 8.Be in the here and now. Wherever you are, life can be beautiful. Observe your surroundings. Look at Hashem’s nature and appreciate the birds and the trees. Breath in the fresh spring air.
- Exercise daily.
