Even though I am a firm believer of eating at home and creating healthy, nutritious foods for your body to thrive, eating out does not necessarily have to be an ‘ultimate no-no”.

Let’s evaluate the fast food lifestyle so that we can get the facts necessary to make proper choices. First of all, many people have a major concern regarding eating a low fat diet, so when they evaluate their menu, they will pick a meal with as low fat as possible. However, they don’t realize that they may be eating foods that are far more dangerous!

Fried foods, for example is known to be extremely injurious to your health as well as hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils. In a world where heart disease is the number one killer, trans fats should be avoided at all cost. If you go into a restaurant and order a salad with fresh olive oil, you are getting a dose of good quality essential fatty acids. Add to that an order of fresh fish and you’re treating yourself to vital omega 3 fatty acids as well. You can even order a grilled chicken with your salad and voila! You have been successful at ordering a healthy fast food meal.

  • Carbonated Sodas: contain high amounts of sugar, caffeine, food colors and the phosphoric acid in colas has been implicated as a possible cause of osteoporosis.
  • Potato chips and French fries: are found as a side dish to almost every fast food meal. Besides the fact that they are very low in nutrients, they are also damaging to your health. They are high in trans fats which can lead to high cholesterol.
  • Baked goods: such as donuts and cake contain extremely high amounts of trans fats and sugar.
  • Hot dogs and cold cuts: are very high in carcinogens such as sodium nitrites.
  • Soups made in fast food joints are usually made with MSG, a very strong neurotoxin.

Accustom yourself to the fast food nutrition facts and get used to saying no to the foods that you know to be unhealthy and even though there is not a very large selection to choose from.

It can be done! You can go into most restaurants today and order foods that keep you on target for attaining your health goals or better yet, try to find a restaurant that is a bit more health conscious and frequent those eateries as much as possible.
