Ten years ago, a normal cholesterol of about 250 was considered normal. Presently, doctors are advocating to keep the levels down to under 150, and they continue to administer statin drugs while recommending reducing the overall dietary fat intake.

I have two questions to ask on soundness of this protocol.

    1. Statin drugs do have their side effects both short term and long term.
    • Nausea
    • Irritablity
    • Amnesia
    • Kidney failure
    • Muscle aching and weakness
    • Problems sleeping
    • Cramping in the legs
    • Rapid loss of mental clarity
    • Inability to walk
    • Constipation
    • Liver damage
    • Neuropathy
    • Destruction of Coq10.

If you are taking statin drugs, I highly recommend that you supplement your diet with adequate amounts of Coq10 since the statins drain coq10 from your body. Lack of Coq10 can be damaging to your heart and can cause heart disease. This is exactly why you would be taking the statins in the first place.

    2. When you lower the fat intake, your body compensates by producing even more cholesterol. Keep in mind that your body needs a certain amount of fats to maintain proper body function. Fats provide energy, they are used as structural components to the cell membranes, the myelin sheath covers the brain and nerve cells, and are the basic components of hormones. They provide healthier skin and are used to cushion the organs such as the heart and kidneys and protect them from injury. So what is a heart healthy diet?

When evaluating your cholesterol levels, it is important to look at all of the bloodwork readings. The total cholesterol is only part of the picture. For example, if your HDL is over 55, this can balance a higher cholesterol, so it becomes of vital importance to make sure your HDL is high enough to balance the total cholesterol. Here are some tips for you to raise the Good Cholesterol (HDL):

  • Exercise- do daily aerobics. If you haven’t exercised in a while, start with about 10 minutes a day and build up from there. Ideally, you would like to exercise from 20 minutes to 45 minutes a day. (Depending on your ability.)
  • B complex
  • Red rice yeast
  • Eat one pink grapefruit a day-according to a study in Israel, this helps reduce the bad cholesterol and helps raise the good.
  • Stress Test- If you get out of breath when exercising or on walking up stairs, you should consider taking a stress test to rule out any heart related involvemtent.
Deep Breathing exercises-helps reduce stress which can play a major role in cholesterol metabolism.
