Tips to Maintain a Healthy Blood Pressure Range

Before we look at the Healthy Blood Pressure Range, let’s understand what blood pressure is so that we can properly evaluate our own blood pressure and decide how to improve it. (If it in fact needs improving.)

Blood pressure consists of and upper, systolic and a lower, diastolic reading. The upper reading measures the pressure when the artery is contracting. The lower reading measures the pressure when the artery is at rest. The consensus of a healthy blood pressure is 120/90. If your blood pressure is high, this is called hypertension, and when it is low it is called hypotension.

Symptoms of high blood pressure include:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Vision difficulties
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Irregular heartbeat

Symptoms of low blood pressure include:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fainting
  • Lack of concentration
  • Blurry vision
  • Nausea
  • Cold skin
  • Rapid or shallow breathing

Oftentimes thinner people will tend to have lower blood pressure and overweight individuals tend to run higher blood pressures. Sometimes you can go get a reading from your doctor and the reading will be higher than a healthy blood pressure range. When you are nervous your parasympathetic nervous system gets stimulated causing your blood pressure to go up. It’s the same response as when your are in a fearful situation. This is typically called ‘fight or flight’ mode. On the other hand, runners tend to have lower blood pressure because their consistent running causes the arteries to pump harder creating an elasticity in arteriole walls. This in turn lowers their blood pressure. That is why exercise in general is good for lowering blood pressure.
