Become Pain Free with the Lower Back pain Diet
Almost everyone has back pain at some point in their lives. The Lower back Pain Diet can help remove pain and inflammation.
According to the National Institute of Health, lower back pain is the second most common neurological disorder in the United States. Only headaches is more common. One out of every two Americans will experience pain severe enough to seek the help of a doctor. As our lifestyles become more sedentary, spending all day long at the desk or computer, our backs have become weaker. Add to this lack of exercise an increasing amount of stress in our lives, and the possibility of developing lower back pain becomes more and more probable.
Not every lower back pain is alike…
and therefore the treatment needs to match the diagnosis. The most common cause of back pain is a “herniated disc”. As a result of spending years of heavy lifting and bending, the disc can wear down, becoming thin, and causing the cartilage to bulge out of its normal position between the vertebrae (spinal bones) and into the spinal canal where the nerves can become compressed or “pinched”. This can cause symptoms ranging from a slight “gnawing” sensation, to a very severe pain which can cause one to literally be bent over in pain.
How often did you have back pain and try all different types of home remedies to alleviate the pain. If your pain comes from simple muscle strain, then oftentimes a hot bath, or an ice compress will help and the problem won’t return. But if the pain keeps coming back, then there is probably a deeper rooted problem that needs to be addressed.
Treat your back like you would your teeth!
Your spine is not unlike your teeth. If you don’t fix a simple cavity it can lead to needing a root canal. Spinal problems left untreated can lead to further degeneration and arthritis. Quite often I will evaluate a person with pain that radiates down the leg or arm, but the MRI showed arthritic calcification protruding into the spinal canal. This cuts off vital nerve supply and can be very dangerous to your health. Proper treatment of chronic back pain is much more than taking the proper pain killer. Advil and Tylenol as well as prescription drugs do not cure back pain! They merely mask the symptoms. If you have ongoing back pain, and do nothing to fix problem, you may cause yourself serious health problems in the future.
My Three Step Cure to Low Back Pain
- Relax
According to John Sarno, M.D. most back pain comes from stress and anxiety. When you are worried on an ongoing basis, your body is placed in a panic mode causing your sympathetic nervous system to over react to the stress. Hormones are produced to maintain your panic reaction, similar to if you were to encounter a life threatening situation. This not only causes great pressure on your back, but can influence your eating habits and cause a rapid deterioration of your health as well. If you are suffering from a chronic stress syndrome then you must take active steps to settle your anxiety. See my page on STRESS for further directions on my effective anti-stress program.
- Diet- make sure you are following an anti-inflammation diet to naturally get your back pain under control. 1.Avoid all trans fats, such as hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils. 2. Eliminate chemical additives in your diet. Read the ingredients. If you don't know what you're reading, it's probably not good for you.3. Avoid sugar, coffee and sodas. (With the exception of possibly seltzer)4. Eat an abundance of vegetables and fruits. 5. Take digestive enzymes.6. Take anti-inflammatory enzymes such as bromelain, papayin, curcumin, and quercitin.
- Exercise Daily- stretching is particularly beneficial for low back pain.
- Lie on your back and bring your knees to your chest. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 5 times.
- Lie on your stomach and lift your leg off the ground for 5 seconds. (One leg at a time.)
- Tighten your abdominal muscles. Many back pains stem from weak abdominals, especially if you are female and have some children. If you have had abdominal surgery you may have back pain as well.
- In a standing position, place your hands on your hips, and rotate your pelvis in a full circle first clockwise then counterclockwise. Do five circles in each direction.
- Yoga and Tai Chi can be effective in strengthening your back while allowing you to relax as well.
- Strengthen your core muscles.
Body work in the form of chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, and cranio-sacral therapy are especially beneficial for improving back pain as well as for a general mind-body treatment to help in your overall health.
