ANSWER BY Dr. Miller -- The Sluggish Thyroid Syndrome by: Anonymous
Hi Marcia,
People with sluggish thyroid are presented with a real challenge. How to remedy this problem will be different if you are on synthroid or are not on any thyroid medication. Synthroid is a synthetic form of T4 hormone. The thyroid needs T4 to convert to T3 in the body in order to be assimilated for use in the body?s metabolic processes. Most of this conversion takes place in the liver, so if the liver is sluggish, you may not be making this critical conversion, and thereby not be getting the full benefit of the medication. In my practice, I will evaluate the bloodwork, and if indicated, recommend specific supplements according to your need to help your body convert the T4 to T3.
If you are not on thyroid medication, I would recommend that you visit your Medical doctor to rule out any pathology in the thyroid. If there is no pathology, you may benefit from taking natural thyroid supplements such as gugulsterones. Also, abstain from eating cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, and cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts and soy bean products, since they contain chemicals called goitrogens that disrupt the thyroid from effectively producing thyroid hormones. If you do not have a thyroid problem, the cruciferous vegetables have not shown to have any negative effect on your health.
Of course, follow all of my directions for a wholesome diet and you should have no problem loosing your weight.
To Your Health,
Dr. Miller
